Passadiços do Paiva and 516 Arouca Bridge: Routes Overview

There are two trailheads for the Passadiços do Paiva. You can either start at Areinho and hike northward to Espinuca. Alternatively, you can start at Espinuca and hike southwards to Areinho. Although each route traverses the same trail (albeit in a different direction), it’s a slightly different experience depending on where you start. We recommend starting at Areinho to get the 538 stair ascent (and subsequent descent) out of the way first, so you can enjoy a slight decline on the boardwalk from there.

Getting to Areinho Trailhead  The Areinho trailhead is nestled in the mountains outside of Arouca town, accessed by winding roads with tight turns. Accessing the trailhead from the R326-1 road, you’ll turn down a steep road with only enough room for one car at a time (if you encounter an oncoming car either you or them will have to nudge over, or back up to allow the other to pass). The trailhead is compact, with 20-30 parking spots. When we visited, park staff assisted drivers to find spots, or to make spots in side areas. The trail starts immediately from the parking lot.

Getting to Espiunca Trailhead  The Espinuca trailhead is located in the town of Espinuca. The parking lot is located at the riverfront beach in town, and from there it’s a short 1000 foot / 304 meter walk to the ticket booth and trailhead located off the highway.

Getting to Alverenga Trailhead  This trailhead is used for visitors accessing only the 516 Arouca Bridge from Alverenga. Park at the Albisqueiros parking lot and walk 0.6 mi / 1 km following the marked signs through town to the Alverenga trailhead.
