The 516 Arouca Bridge is one of the world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridges, and allows visitors to cross it for sweeping views of the Paiva River valley. The bridge travels for 516 meters (1693 feet) across the gorge, at a height of 175 meters (574 feet) above the ground. It has sweeping views of the river valley and the nearby Cascata das Aguieiras waterfall.
The 516 Arouca Bridge held the record of the world’s longest suspension footbridge, until it was eclipsed recently by similar bridges in the Czech Republic and in Vietnam. The construction was spearheaded by the mayor of Arouca as a way to draw additional tourism to the region.
All visits to the bridge are guided and require tickets.
Access points The 516 Arouca Bridge has two access points: Areinho and Alverenga. Areinho takes longer and ascends 538 stairs, but is more convenient for those hiking the Passadiços do Paiva trail. Alvarenga is easier but doesn’t provide the same access to the Passadiços do Paiva trail.
